Practice Building Time

Do you have an inconsistent flow of clients into your coaching practice? Do you find that you have periods of famine and feast throughout the year? If so, have a look at your situation for possible causes.

In many cases, you can trace inconsistent results in your coaching practice to the inconsistent application of focus and effort on your part. There are of course seasonal factors that can have an effect over the course of a year so don't beat yourself up unnecessarily :-)

A mistake that I see some coaches make is that they don't focus on the building their coaching practice on a consistent basis. Note that the real keyword here is consistent. Remember that consistency creates results.

Here's a phrase I learned recently from the personal development speaker T. Harv Eker and it's particularly pertinent to this discussion:

Where attention goes, energy flows and results show.

Thus if your attention on attracting clients into your coaching practice is applied in a haphazard way, your energy and results will most likely be erratic too.

So what can you do?

Time for a Joke...

I had a call with a coach the other day and they told me that they were marketing themselves religiously. "Congratulations!" I said. "Yes, retorted the coach, "Before I go to bed at night I pray that I'll have more clients in the morning!"

> Ways to develop consistency...

Here are some tips to increase the level of consistency that you experience in the results of your coaching practice:

1. Develop a habit - Decide on a regular time that you will focus on building your coaching practice. Depending on your situation this could be a regular day each week or a regular time each day.

For example, I have some clients who work during the daytime and they devote 30-minutes each day to their coaching practice. Whilst this may not sound a lot, over time this level of consistency creates results.

If you find that you have more time on your hands and few clients, consider setting aside at least a day per week to client attraction activities. Activity breeds results.

2. Track your progress - Whilst it's one thing to decide on a regular time for your practice building activity, it's usually quite another thing to actually get yourself to do it. Set up some form of accountability, even if it's to yourself.

For example, I have some clients who chart their progress by colouring in squares on graph paper and giving themselves a reward once they reach a pre-determined milestone. Hey, the reward doesn't have to be that big either and I've heard that a cappuccino or Ben & Jerry's ice cream can work wonders :-)

3. Notice results - Whilst consistent activity is admirable, make sure that you monitor the results that your actions are generating (if any). This way you'll be able to tell if you need to change your effort to get the results you desire. Of course, if the results are not being generated, then it's time to change your approach.

So, when is your practice building time?

With very best wishes,
