Why
Coaching as a Business Sucks
Over
the past few months I've been learning from two world leading
business mentors in the US. In our exchanges we've explored
various business models together with the advantages and disadvantages
of each. It's led me to a very strong conclusion...
The
way most coaches 'choose' to build their coaching business sucks.
There's no other way to put it without jolting you to reconsider
your approach. Why?
You
see, most coaches focus mainly on one thing in their marketing
- getting more one-on-one clients. The more the merrier they
say. Not so...
If
you go down this road you may fill your practice but at the
same time you effectively create a job for yourself. If you
are not on the end of a phone or face-to-face with your clients
- you don't earn a red cent. Now that sucks - big time.
You
only have so many hours in the day and even if you fill your
practice to the brim, you'll end up at a point of saturation
in the size of your coaching practice.
How
do I know? Because I've done it and 'won' the proverbial T-shirt.
So
please get some fresh air, give yourself a good shake and take
a look at the direction you're heading with the model you are
currently using to build your coaching practice. Are you just
digging yourself further and further into the time-for-money
exchange trap?
How
to 'Un-suck' Your Coaching Practice
Here
are some points to consider to reduce the likelihood that you
have a coaching practice that sucks:
1.
Look for Time Leverage - Look for ways that you can
leverage your most precious resource of time so that you generate
more from less.
For
example, you may want to move into delivering group coaching
(or training) so that you can reach more people in a given
hour of your time.
2.
Look for Effort Leverage - Look for ways that you
can get more results from your efforts.
For
example, if you take the time to produce information once
(e.g. in a book or information product) then you can generate
returns from it many times over - often without you being
there to deliver it. Now that is nice :-)
3.
Look for Money Leverage - Can you see ways that you
can utilise your financial resources to gain more leverage?
For
example, you may decide to hire other people to perform tasks
that are cheaper than your own hourly rate. Just because something
needs doing in your coaching practice doesn't necessarily
mean that it needs to be performed by you! This especially
applies to tasks that you don't enjoy or aren't suited for.
I
hope you find this week's newsletter thought provoking and that
it's got you to examine your approach to building your coaching
practice. If you found it useful do let me know by sending me
an e-mail OK?
So,
can you see why some coaching businesses suck?
With very best
wishes,
